Herbert Gardens

Welcome to my blog exploring and documenting modernist architecture in Wellington! I'll try to focus on a broad range of buildings, however I have a personal interest in housing and tower blocks, particularly social housing complexes. Where possible I'll be trying to supply the correct details, however if you think you know more or you have something you'd like to add, please comment and I'll amend the post.

Thank you

Herbert Gardens

Herbert Gardens is a private residential apartment block built around a central shaft, and completed some time in the mid-sixties. Unfortunately I cannot find any dated photographs which give an indication to the completion date, however I felt this photo was interesting as it shows the tower under construction. It's interesting to note the  central shaft is still being poured - the shuttering is still in place at the top. The lack of other high rise structures surrounding the site suggest that this was an anchor-project for the development of the Terrace.

Herbert Gardens today - glistening modern perfection overlooking the Wellington motorway.
